"Many of us are dying to get our stories out there.
I have read over a thousand paranormal and/or fururistic fictions, most often romances -- single titles, anthologies, series; label them what you will. Each
romance contained strong plot elements of adventure targeted for adults.
Having enjoyed many of these stories I can attest in honest truth that I found more than a few to be quite extraordinary. You know, the ones that were so original you still think about them sometimes while also wishing you could read them again for the first time.
It was such a wonderful day when I found vampire, werewolf, witch, gargoyle, etc. romance literature written for adults. Conversely, after several years of reading this genre, it dawned me that maybe some twenty-five percent of those thousand stories I had spent my time and money on were more soporific than Ambien.
I wondered why that was, only to discover how diverse romance fiction is. I prefer to read and write fast action stories with witty, sexy relationships between the hero and heroine, or whatever the combination of lead characters happens to be.
Likely, romance readers, as well as other genre readers, find a plot that pleases them and then come to expect more and more of the same. It's like comfort reading. I understand it.
I have to say, I appreciate originality more than any other quality in writing. Editors call writers who repeat the same aged formula's in their books,
"LAZY" writers. My, my, I hope I never do that!
I may have a long way to go before my first short story hits your Kindles, then again, maybe not. But when my work finds it's way to you I swear by the powers that be ... it will be original (cue lightening bolt for dramatic emphasis).
Ask a writer if she/he has been taught formulaic writing and you will probably give them the best laugh they have had in weeks. There is no formula for writing. Just a handful of popular writers who find one plot and repeat it over, and over again.
I tried to continue reading a very famous and prolific author of popular thrillers who writes using his same formula where the plot unfolds in the same way and in the exact same chapters in every one of his novels. Not good, not original, not an inspiration for either we readers or writers, but he is lining his pockets with green. This is the same concept as Fast Food addiction. The family vacations in Paris and the kids want a Big Whopping Burger w fries. A cultured couple tour Napa Valley and at 5pm convert to Miller-time.
For sure, follow the generally accepted 'rules' of Romance fiction or what ever applies to or is advised for successful execution of your genre. Not nice to confuse or mislead the reader. Right? But my gosh, be original. Create your own universe, props, dilemmas, curses, abilities, characters, ect. No one wants to read your take on Rhett and Scarlett or Capt. Kirk and Mr. Spock, ask any Editor. Shake things up and begin your book with the big battle scene or revelation, instead of always having the story peak in chapter 20.
I guess you can't please everyone all the time, including me. (Out of deference to achievement, I won't be citing the titles of works I found lacking. I don't want to get blacklisted for my strong views before I even publish my first short story and, well, I'm just not that mean-spirited!)
Like the Phoenix rising out of my previous career as a State Food Safety and Fire Inspector, I realized I had a burning, unstoppable mission. That realization alone led me to believe I could create a decent Paranormal Erotic Romance, or at worst, one that didn't leave me snoozing by the middle of chapter two. I'm doing everything I can to make it happen and realize my dream.
Praise be to the the Deity of your choice, I have yet to run out of stories to tell and I am determined to hone the craft of story telling until I create many delectable, enchanting tales that publishers will buy and you will enjoy.

Chrissie's advice and interest in my one-woman-plight for publication has taken my writing technique further than the year and a half I just spent attending a writer's group. Hire a professional Editor to look at your writing style if you want to take your skills to the next level. Hire Chrissy if you want someone to do it with professionalism and keen insight that will focus on YOUR specific area's of improvement, while not ripping you a new one or making you feel like you shouldn't quit your day job!
While accomplishing my goal of getting my novel out there to you all, I invite you to enjoy the ride. I can find neither fault nor shame in aggressively pursuing something new and exciting and making lots of mistakes while you are learning.
